JONES

Florence Ruth

nee Hamer Ruth, pictured climbing spiral stairs to the crown of the Statue of Liberty on her birthday in 2018, died suddenly following aortic dissection in Adelaide, South Australia (SA) on September 5, 2020, aged 81.

Born at Cefnybryn, Newtown, Ruth was the Daughter of Charlie and Gwladys Hamer. She was the Widow of Roger M. Jones, with whom she farmed at Ty Gwyn, Abermule. Ruth was also fortunate to enjoy long-term partnerships with Tom C. Leeke of Churchstoke and John K. Pritchard of London (formerly of Rhosllannerchrugog).

Amongst her sporting abilities, Ruth was a demon hockey player, she represented Wales as well as playing for Newtown and while living in Hope Valley near Minsterley, the Shropshire county side. Perhaps it was on the hockey field that Ruth developed her strong sense of fair play. She remained an avid watcher of sport throughout her life.

In some ways, Ruth defied convention. She certainly rose above small- mindedness. Her lifelong appetite for adventure, as evidenced by her rally driving exploits with Sister Brenda, earned her a new nickname in retirement in Australia, 'Struth'. It was to that faraway continent that Ruth permanently relocated at the age of 80.

An Australian Funeral Service has been held for Ruth in seaside Glenelg, SA. In central Adelaide, her love of the performing arts is marked by a memorial plaque in the newly renovated Her Majesty's Theatre.

Ruth is survived by her seven siblings Brenda, Freda, Edith, Nesta, Harry, Maureen and Mervyn, SA based Son Rob Hamer Jones and two adoring canines, Harvey and Nyx. With Ruth's passing, the latter have sadly lost their source of malted milk biscuits.

Rob wishes to thank the extended Family and Ruth's wonderful Friends for their messages of support. Once travel restrictions ease, Ruth's cremated remains will be returned home to Wales for Interment at Newtown Cemetery, where her Parents are buried.

A Memorial Service will be held at that time to celebrate Ruth's marvellous life.
